Editor's note

One of the main subjects of this issue can be determined as prospects of Russia as a secular state. The recent months’ events connected with the handing-over procedure of monuments of religious destination to the Russian Orthodox Church are so intensive and ambiguous that we have tried to make a ground where parts could express their opinion and, perhaps, hear another position (different from theirs) in questions of interrelation of society, culture and religion.

Yury Lotman describes an amusing story in one of his studies. By chance stylish madams and tailors came to a famous scientist P. Chebyshev’s lecture that was devoted to mathematical aspects of dress cutting… However the first lector’s phrase: “Let us imagine that a human body has a shape of a ball” – put them to flight. Only mathematicians were left in the room for they didn’t find anything surprising in that. The text “selected” its audience. Why did I recollect this story? Development occurred to become an obligatory requirement of time.

It is paradoxical but slowing down of the life rhythm or the changing of atmosphere and surroundings allows including the proposed themes into your own picture of the world.

Not everyone of us has abilities to make everyday life a holiday if we speak about a real holiday that is a holiday of our heart. The constant Soviet holidays slip along the people’s consciousness though for some they help to spend considerable budgetary funds and organising these holidays are a real headache for local cultural bodies.
